Romney concedes: War was mismanaged

The Assoiciated Press reports
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney conceded that the war in Iraq has been poorly managed and may hurt Republicans again next year, but he refused to oppose the course President Bush has charted.
I would have to agree with Romney. The war has been mismanaged to this point however I think Romney is right not to oppose the new course because it is completely brand new. It seems to be the only viable option for "victory," the American people and members of Congress should give it an opportunity to work. If you don't we are still in a "poorly managed" war, the tables may change.

What do you think?

It is interesting-- the preliminary candidates and their views of the war. Only Edwards has taken a strong stand against President Bush. Surprisingly, the Republican contenders have stayed quite loyal. I think that will hurt them greatly at the polls. I'm surprised, and saddened, at the lack of differing views in the 2008 candidate-wannabes. Thanks for the discussion! Great blog. Mine: http://whatisgwbushdoing.blogspot.com/

The circumstances and the future of this country are pretty clear cut. We have to, and I really mean this, finish the job. When I say finish the job I don't mean get out, I mean stop the terrorist organization infiltration of Iraq and put the sectarian violence to a stop.

General Petraeus, the new commander of American forces in Iraq, wrote the counterinsurgency manual in 2003 on winning this war. In it, he said that to win we were going to need 400,000 coalition troops. Specifically, he said we needed 250,000 in Baghdad. That means that President Bush, although I believe he is certainly doing the right thing by trying to finish this thing before he leaves office/we fail completely, is going in with a lot less people than necessary. However, if anyone can pull it off, it's the guy who wrote the book on it...

reply to thinker - Barack Obama has also taken a strong stand against this surge in troops, and he has introduced legislation that breaks the view that Democrats have no plan for Iraq.

reply to Reuben - This policy is not completely brand new, it has been tried twice before, and has failed both times. Victory in Iraq cannot be gained until we give the responsibility to the Iraqi government and people, and that will not happen until we leave their country.

and as I also said in my article "What Needs to Happen in Iraq", which can be seen on www.openforum.wordpress.com, the surge is not our only option for victory. We need to start reducing our involvement in Iraq, not increase it!
